Valkyries 16U Coaches

Zac Winking

Head Coach: Zac Winking

Zac Winking is more than just the head coach of the Valkyries 16U team — he’s the driving force behind the entire Valkyries hockey program. As the program’s founder, Zac turned a vision into reality: creating a competitive spring and summer opportunity for girls in western North Dakota who too often get overlooked when it comes to higher-level play.

A former Mandan Braves player and a member of the 2008 Team ND boys team, Zac understands what it takes to compete — and what it takes to grow. After six years coaching youth hockey in Mandan and two seasons with the River City Hockey AAA program, he recognized a gap in opportunities for female athletes in the region. Instead of waiting for change, he built it.

Zac’s coaching philosophy goes far beyond systems and skill drills. He believes the mental side of the game is the true game-changer. By instilling confidence, resilience, and belief in every player, he empowers athletes to push past limits and discover what they’re truly capable of achieving. For Zac, success isn’t just measured in wins — it’s measured in growth, leadership, and the courage to compete.

Outside of coaching Zac enjoys fishing, hunting, and spending time with family at the lake where he is the "Fearless Family Skipper" of the surf boat.  More importantly, he enjoys time with his daughter watching her do all the things she loves to do.
